Michiel Schuurman brought the mindset of Singularity University to the Netherlands in 2011, together with Yuri van Geest. Since then, he coordinated many events and programs, organized Global Impact Challenges and acted as the Summit Director, amongst other things. He now focuses on the Culture & Org Development at SU Benelux. Michiel is also a Certified Human Potential Coach and the Secretary of the Startup Foundation, aimed at helping startups grow and flourish.
Prior to this, Michiel has been the key researcher and contributor of the international bestseller ‘Exponential Organizations’, Advisory Board member for the SXSW Pitch competition, and Co-founder of Lean Startup Machine Rotterdam, which brought the successful Lean Startup principles to the mainland of Europe.
For Michiel, his passion for leveraging technology to solve global challenges began while working on his own game concept ‘Guardian of Eden’, which became a finalist of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2008 in France and the winner of the United Nations WSYA 2009 in Mexico. He has a background in Media Technology (Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences).
Ever since I experienced the mindset, ideas and vision of Singularity University in 2011, I was amazed at the potential of exponential technologies, and how it can help us solve the world’s biggest challenges. This is why I dedicated my free time into bringing this message to the Netherlands. I’m proud of what we have achieved since then, with highlights such as the Global Impact Challenges, the 4 SU Summits we organized, founding the first Country Partnership in 2016 (officially opened by Queen Máxima), the talented team we formed, and now the expansion to the Benelux.
